Exploring Progressive Revenue Models for a Stronger, Fairer City

We need to think creatively about how to fund the essential services our communities rely on. However, any solution must ensure we do not place an undue burden on our lower-income and working-class neighbors. We can prioritize exploring progressive revenue sources that maximize the city’s current resources and generate new income in ways that are fair, sustainable, and aligned with our values. This means seeking revenue options that ensure the wealthiest pay their fair share while protecting the financial well-being of our most vulnerable residents.

Together, we can create a strong annual budget and equitable revenue mechanisms by:

  • Advocating for a thorough audit of existing revenue sources to ensure every dollar is spent efficiently and equitably.

  • Researching and implementing innovative revenue models such as progressive tax structures, value capture funding, and new partnerships that ensure long-term financial stability while easing the burden on low- and middle-income residents.

  • Increasing funding for human services, community development, and citizen engagement to improve the quality of life in Lansing’s neighborhoods.

  • Working with state leaders to advocate for state budgets that invest in local governments.

  • Implementing an ethical investment clause to prohibit the City of Lansing from benefiting from ventures that are complicit in human rights abuses.
