Improving Accountability and Standards of Governance

If we expect residents to stay informed about city events and participate in decision-making, we must work to utilize real data to implement innovative solutions to make government services and processes more efficient and transparent.

From the ease with which you navigate the city’s website to having a clear picture of how many pink and red-tagged homes occupy our neighborhoods, efforts must be made to proactively share information with the public in a clear, concise, and accessible way.

Lansing residents deserve transparency and accountability from their government. This can be accomplished by:

  • Strengthening oversight mechanisms to monitor the performance of elected officials and city departments, ensuring that city policies align with the needs of residents and city resources are used effectively.

  • Launching initiatives that give residents easy access to city data on public services, spending, and progress on key initiatives, enabling them to track progress and contribute informed feedback.

  • Establish a Millenial and Gen Z Commission to improve the representation of young people in our government.

  • Utilize data and evidence to guide city policies and investments, ensuring decisions are based on facts and measurable outcomes, not just opinions, to create a more efficient and accountable government.

  • Requiring developers and businesses receiving tax incentives be held to enforceable community benefits agreements that guarantee accountability, transparency, and long-term value for Lansing residents. This ensures that corporate tax incentives lead to real community improvements before tax breaks are approved.
