Hi, I'm Olivia Vaden (pronounced vay-din), and I'm running to be your next City Council member.
As a Queer Black woman, a first-generation college graduate, and someone who grew up in a poor working-class family, I deeply understand the importance of fighting for opportunities and standing up for what’s right.
My experiences—both professional and lived—shape my perspective and inform how I approach leadership: with compassion, integrity, and a deep commitment to service.
Growing up, my family faced cycles of substance abuse, poverty, and incarceration. Those
experiences have shaped my values and my vision for a more equitable future. I lead with
empathy and a desire to uplift others who’ve faced similar struggles.

I earned my Bachelor’s in Public Policy from Michigan State University in 2018 and recently completed my Master’s in Public Policy from the University of Michigan. Through my academic journey, I developed a strong understanding of the systems that impact our communities, and I’m committed to using that knowledge to drive meaningful change.
I’m proud to serve as Executive Board President of the Southwest Action Group, working alongside other dedicated community leaders to improve our city for everyone.
I can usually be found volunteering with local nonprofits, gardening, figuring out today’s Wordle, surveying the state for the best camping spots with my partner, or exploring Greater Lansing with my chocolate lab, Reba.
I believe in a city where every person—regardless of their zip code—has the chance to thrive. If elected, I’ll fight for policies that create opportunity, promote justice, and ensure that everyone in our community is heard and valued.
Let's work together to build a brighter, more inclusive future. I would be honored to earn your trust and support.
